On Canada's Pacific coast, between the northern tip of Vancouver Island and the Alaska border, lies one of the earth's largest remaining rainforests. This amazingly diverse rainforest is home to salmon, sea lions, eagles, wolves and bears, including the rare white Spirit Bear. With a local Gita'at Guide we will learn about their native culture while exploring the native village of Old Heartly Bay and searching the shoreline for pictoglyphs. Weather permitting, we will visit the exposed outer coast, perhaps going shore at remote Goose Island to explore deserted beaches and comb for glass fishing floats that have drifted across the north Pacific from Japan. Bella Bella, located on the famous “Inside Passage” is the centre of Heiltsuk native culture. This small coastal village was once the site of an early Hudson’s Bay Company trading post. With gorgeous lakes and magnificent waterfalls it truly is worth the visit.
