Students will be taught the seamanship required to operate orion safely and effectively, with the staff giving more responsibility for the boat to the students as the program progresses with the goal being a wholly student run boat for the last days of the program. Course Credits: Life onboard Orion requires full participation. Onboard Orion the students run the show. Students can expect to be fully involved with all aspects of the program from setting sail and cooking meals to navigation and experimental design. Over the course of two weeks students will apply the seamanship and navigation skills they learn to cruise the waters of the San Juan Islands meeting with researchers, policy makers and industry representatives who have helped shape the Orca recovery plan. Students will be encouraged to explore the issues from all sides and develop their own ideas about what policies are best for the whale. |
