Ketchikan to Juneau Sample Itinerary:

Day 1:

Board the David B in Ketchikan and meet the crew: Capt. Jeffrey, Chef Christine and mate/engineer Aaron. After you have stowed your gear come up to the galley and enjoy some scones freshly baked by Christine. You are now set to begin your Alaska Discovery tour. This first day we will visit the village of Meyer's Chuck then drop in on a friend in Union Bay. Back underway again we will head north towards Deer Island and our first night's anchorage at Frosty Bay. By now you will have worked up a good appetite for a dinner of Grilled Alaska Halibut with seasonal vegetables and fresh baked bread, paired with a fine wine.

Day 2:

We leave Frosty Bay after a breakfast of Swedish pancakes and fresh fruit and head towards Wrangle via Blake Channel and Eastern Passage. Along the way we will keep our eyes open for bears and other wildlife along the shoreline. A mid-day stop in Wrangle will give you the opportunity to explore an Alaskan frontier town. Back on the David B we will continue to Duncan Canal for some bird watching and a secure anchorage.

Day 3:

In the morning you will awaken to the smells of Salmon Crepe's with gouda for breakfast. After some bird watching we will leave Duncan Canal and head up Wrangle Narrows to the busy fishing port of Petersburg. Norwegian heritage. Leaving Petersburg we will motor over to Thomas Bay and anchor at Ruth Island Cove. Here you can spend time exploring by kayak.

Day 4:

This morning we will leave our anchorage for Baird Glacier. No longer a tidewater glacier, Baird still offers magnificent scenery. Take a hike near the glacier for a close-up look at the fascinating way new plants colonize the bare ground of the retreating glacier. After your hike we will return to the boat for a hot lunch of hardy split pea soup and oven fresh oatmeal bread. Other possible hikes are the Cascade Creek Trail or the Spurt Lake Trail. After lunch we will leave Thomas Bay for the remote island of Kuiu and our night's anchorage in Halleck Harbor. The waters of Fredrick Sound on our way to Kuiu Island are a great place to keep your eyes open for humpback and orca whales.

Day 5:

In the morning spend time exploring Halleck Harbor by kayak or go ashore for a nature walk. After breakfast we will leave Halleck Harbor to visit the Native Village of Kake and the world's largest totem pole. On your way to Kake you will be treated to a breakfast of Crab Cakes Florentine. After exploring Kake it's time to move on to Gambier Bay where grizzly bears forage along the shore for salmon.

Day 6:

In Gambier Bay you can spend time kayaking or watching for wildlife. Later in the morning we will to head to Endicott Arm and Wood Spit. These cold nutrients filled waters are great areas for viewing seals hauled out on icebergs. Wood Spit at the top Endicott Arm will afford us protected anchorage and a chance to spend time exploring by kayak or ashore before a dinner of Smoked Salmon and Shitake Mushroom Risotto.

Day 7:

In the morning we will leave Wood Spit and motor up to Dawes Glacier. There will be plenty of time for watching wildlife and pieces of ice as we wind our way to the glacier. Once there we will safely view and listen to the glacier that once had its end located at Wood Spit where we just spent the night. After we have spent time with the glacier we will turn back and head to Tracy Arm Cove for the night.

Day 8:

On the last day of the cruise we will be heading to Juneau. If there is time we might be able to stop at Taku Harbor for one last exploration of the trip. Go ashore for a hike or take the kayak out and cruise around the harbor looking at old cannery buildings and thinking about when the harbor was used by the Hudson's Bay Co in the early 1900s. After a while it is time to return to the boat and head for Juneau where you will disembark with loads of memories and lot's of photographs from your Alaska Discovery tour aboard the David B.
