With teak decks, sleek racing lines and a rich mahogany interior she really is a beautiful boat.  She has been beautifully restored for cruising the waters of the Pacific Northwest.  The Martha offers cruises in the San Juan and Gulf Islands and up the inside passage to Desolation Sound for up to 6 people.

History

Built in 1907 for J. R. Hanify and named after his wife, Martha Fitzmaurice Hanify.  Martha is a B. B. Crowninshield design built at W. F. Stone Boat Yard in San Francisco. Interior is Honduran mahogany, graced with leaded glass cabinetry below decks. Martha originally was gaff rigged and is now staysail rigged.  The Schooner Martha was once owned by James Cagney for 9 years and the actor was quoted as saying" "The Martha sailed like a dream, and I certainly didn't need or want another...".  Once the Martha was brought to Washington, she later got badly damaged in a yard accident in 1976 and was declared scrap.  Thanks to the Edgberts who spent 20 years restoring and caring for her, she still graces us with her beauty.  Today the Schooner Martha Foundation does all the maintenance and restoration necessary to keep her young.

Accommodations

The Schooner Martha has 4 upper and lower bunks and 1 double bunk for accommodations up to 6 people.  There are 2 bathrooms onboard and 1 hot shower.  The onboard cuisine consists of lots of fresh northwest choices.  We can accommodate some dietary restrictions and vegetarians and vegans with advance notice.

Crew

Captain Robert d'Arcy is a licensed United States Coast Guard 100 ton Master. Not only is Robert a captain of Martha but he is also the project manager for all restoration projects on board her. Martha has been under the stewardship of The Schooner Martha Foundation for ten years. Robert has completed major restoration projects on Martha each year with the help of many volunteers. Captain d'Arcy grew up sailing on the East Coast with his family and building boats with his father. He worked at Mystic Seaport Museum for 5 years doing historical research and also as shipwright helping to restore the Charles W. Morgan.

Holly Kays d'Arcy worked for Sound Sails in Port Townsend and gained experience on local schooners. In the summer of 2001 she was able to join the Alcyone family to sail from Maine to Galway, Ireland. Robert and Holly’s daughter Mary was born in the spring of 2003. Since then she has been an integral part of the crew on board Martha.

The whole team brings their sailing and life experiences together to carry on the legacy of schooner sailing through the Schooner Martha Foundation. All the crew have a deep passion for maritime history and sailing. They love sharing knowledge and experience and will make you feel at home during you stay onboard Martha.
